Consider whether this role can be crafted toward greater alignment, or whether it fundamentally cannot.
  • If all three are compromised: the environment may not support intrinsic motivation structurally. This is worth naming clearly rather than treating as a personal motivation failure. The research is clear: people are not primarily responsible for their motivational states in environments designed to undermine those states.

The same diagnostic applies to personal projects, creative work, and habits. A habit that is consistently abandoned is often one in which the mastery component is absent (no sense of progress), the autonomy component is absent (it was adopted because you "should," not because you chose it), or the purpose component is absent (the connection between the habit and something you genuinely care about has not been made explicit).
